Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Spardha
Homi Bhabha Bal Vaidnyanik Spardha (HBBVS) is one of the competitive exams for students of class VI and IX. It is conducted by the Mumbai Science Teachers' Association since 1981 in order to encourage students to take interest in science, to inculcate scientific attitude and to search for science talent in students.
Eligibility: Class VI and IX students.
Languages in which exam is conducted: English, Marathi and Hindi
Exam pattern: Exam is conducted in 3 phases.
Phase I: Written test of 100 marks of duration 1 hr and 30 min.
The multiple choice questions are based on science & GK in
Reward of Phase I: a) Top 7.5% students are selected for phase II
b) Students scoring above 35 marks get passing certificate
Phase II: Practical test of 10 marks of duration 10 min each for
Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Reward of Phase II: a) All candidates get merit certificate
b) Selection for phase III -30% of the marks obtained in phase I and marks obtained in phase II are considered.
c) Top 10 % students are selected for phase III
Phase III: Interview.
General interview (30 Marks of 5 – 10 min)
Evaluation of action research report (30 Marks of 5 – 10 min)
Reward of Phase III: a) Considering 30% marks of Phase I, + Marks of Phase II & Ph III, top 10% will get Gold Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 700/-
b) Rest of the candidates will get silver medal, certificates and prize of Rs. 100/-.
Selection in each phase for Mumbai, Thane & Rest of Maharashtra region is done separately. Also selection for each standard & medium is separate.
Majority of the questions will be from SSC board text books.
For Class VI: SSC text books of Class V and VI and related content from CBSE and ICSE board books.
For Class IX: SSC board text books of VII, VIII and IX and related content from CBSE and ICSE board books.
Marathi medium students should refer the English medium textbooks and the ICSE, CBSE books for examples.
Less emphasis will be given for knowledge based questions and more emphasis for understanding, reasoning, correlation, etc.
The questions related to general knowledge in science will be based on the topics like happenings of the last year and science around day to day life.
